We put together this simple solution for smart monitoring of your existing smoke alarms to make your life easier and safer. Just connect the 3 pigtail wires to the last smoke alarm in series, add the Zooz relay to your Z-Wave hub, and receive status notifications in the app whenever any of your smoke alarms is triggered. Make sure your detectors are interconnected. Click here for step-by-step installation instructions.
This small 700 series Z-Wave relay is perfect for 120 V signal monitoring. It will send an on report to your hub whenever the smoke alarm is triggered and will turn back off when the alarm is cleared. You won't control it other than to set it in the off position right after installation.
Optionally, you can connect a 120 V or a dry contact load to be triggered by the ZEN51 relay anytime the alarm goes off. It could be a strobing light or an outdoor siren to boost the alert. This device is not equipped with battery back-up so it will not function during a power failure.

I got this device for Christmas and just installed it this week. If you have a setup where your devices are brought into HomeKit (Mine is an RPi 4 w/ zwave stick -> zwavejs2mqtt -> mqttthing in HomeBridge) the notification for smoke detectors is great. It’s considered a critical alert and makes a noise on your device even if it’s in silent mode. (Make sure you alert other family members before you test, they’ll freak out otherwise!)
My only qualm was that the device wouldn’t fit into any of my smoke alarm boxes. Luckily I have an unfinished bathroom in the basement and I was able to attach it to the smoke detector line in there.
This an innovative and useful solution for my old school First Alert smoke/co sensors. It makes them smart and seamlessly adding to my existing z-wave network.
This kit is a quick way to be able to get status of existing pre-wired smoke detectors in your smart home hub. In my case, using this to reflect the status of existing smoke detectors to be able to trigger automations when the siren goes off.
I use the ZEN51 in conjunction with the First Alert smoke alarm relay (RM4) which is essentially the same as the Kidde but for First Alert (wired) smoke detectors. I used to have the RM4 attached to the contacts of an Ecolink door sensor, but I like the ZEN51 better because (a) it's cheaper, (b) it fits inside the smoke detector box, (c) it can use the AC power already in said box, so (d) it acts as a repeater in my Z-wave mesh. I use Home Assistant which makes it easy to create a binary_sensor template (device_class "smoke") based on the state of the switch, which in turn I can see in Apple Home as a smoke alarm for alerts on my phone when I'm away. It's important to note that the switch in the relay is effectively "read-only" — If you turn it on, it does not trigger the smoke detectors in the house, it just turns itself on and off when the detectors "fire". Incidentally I submitted a service ticket detailing my setup and a few weeks later this kit showed up here, so I'm guessing I gave Zooz this idea? Enjoy!
